Now in its fifth year, this initiative has become a cornerstone of Mandela Day in Gauteng, drawing together hundreds of volunteers, corporates and community members. The goal for 2025 is to pack 5 000 food hampers that will reach more than 20 000 vulnerable South Africans, including women-headed households, children and the elderly.

This collaboration between a leading humanitarian organisation and a beloved sporting institution reflects a shared commitment to practical, community-driven impact. From 9am, volunteers will fill the stadium field, working side by side and guided by Madiba’s enduring values of compassion, dignity and service.

“Mandela Day is not just a date; it’s an opportunity to make a difference,” says Jono Leaf-Wright, the CEO of Lions Cricket.

“At Lions Cricket, we believe in One Team, One Stadium, One City of Gold. That’s why we’re calling on fans, corporates and the public to come and play their part, because this is what building a better South Africa looks like,” he adds.

Ashraful Aid will once again lead the day’s logistics and mobilisation. With more than 28 years of experience in delivering food relief and emergency aid across South Africa, the organisation understands the power of collective action in times of hardship.

“This is more than an event; it’s a moment of national solidarity,” says Suhail Wadee, CEO of Ashraful Aid.

“We see the daily reality of hunger and hardship, and Mandela Day allows South Africans from all walks of life to respond with compassion and action. We’re proud to stand alongside Lions Cricket once again to lead this effort,” he adds.

Volunteers will pack hampers side by side with players from the DP World Lions, Proteas men’s and Proteas women’s teams, offering participants the chance to serve alongside some of South Africa’s sporting heroes.

The event will include light refreshments, media coverage and a strong online presence throughout the day.

Corporates are encouraged to sponsor hampers and bring their teams. Individuals can also register and participate.

This is an opportunity to roll up your sleeves and make a real, immediate difference, because “it is still in your hands to combat poverty and inequity".
