Celebrate Mandela Day with the Joburg LitDistrict

Books have the power to do more than tell stories. They connect people, spark conversations and help us imagine better futures.

This Mandela Day, Bridge Books and the Joburg LitDistrict, together with a range of partners, are inviting Johannesburg residents to celebrate the joy of reading, learning and community through two days of activities that bring books and public spaces to life.

On 17 July, Donald Mackay Park in Berea will become a hub of storytelling, environmental action and community building. Volunteers can help create permanent Book Nests that will make books more accessible to local residents, while families can enjoy storytelling sessions, a pop-up children's library, seedling planting, eco-themed readings and a community park clean-up.

On 18 July, the historic Johannesburg City Library will open its doors for free guided tours, giving visitors the opportunity to explore one of the city's most treasured public spaces. Children can enjoy reading activities in the library's children's section, while visitors can also learn more about the library's educational offerings, including Microsoft and Cisco certification programmes.

By bringing together books, green spaces and community, the initiative reminds us that Mandela Day is not only about giving our time, but about investing in knowledge, belonging and opportunities that continue long after the day has ended.
