The Massachusetts legislature has passed a resolution declaring 18 July Nelson Mandela Day. The event took place at State House in Massachusetts, United States, on 18 July 2012.

The resolution effectively makes Mandela Day legally recognised by all residents of Massachusetts.

An extract of the resolution reads as follows:

“It has been decided that Nelson Mandela’s legacy should be honoured by establishing Mandela Day, to be celebrated around the world each year on July 18, his birthday;

“Therefore, be it resolved, that on July 18 2012, the Massachusetts House of Representatives will recognise Mandela Day and encourage all residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to volunteer in their communities for 67 minutes to honour the 67 years that Nelson Mandela worked to change South Africa and the world for the better…”

Representative Jason Lewis (second from left) hosted an event at the Massachusetts State House to recognize Mandela Day.
