Breadline Africa: Mandela Day Libraries Project

A simple solution to the problem of a shortage of library facilities is to provide one – in a box!

Breadline Africa RSA (BLA), in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, launched a project in 2011 that identified primary schools that were in dire need of library facilities. Since then, this has been achieved through the placing of repurposed shipping containers to supply an almost-instant library facility.

Annually, many thousands of individuals are made aware of the need for each South African to give up 67 minutes of our time for needy causes on one day of the year, in honour of Mr Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of active civil service to our nation.
 
This year will be a special day of commemoration as it marks the first Mandela Day after the passing of our beloved statesman. As a special tribute to Madiba, Stop Hunger SA will be marking this day with a special event, Meals in Memory. 

67 houses in one week: Habitat for Humanity’s call to action
